2009 Retrofit program a successThe Energy Efficiency Retrofit Experience

The Columbian Centennial Housing Society in Kelowna recently completed Energy Efficiency Retrofits through the LiveSmart BC Efficiency Assistance Program (LEAP).

We heard about LEAP through BCNPHA and having had some concerns about the energy efficiency of our housing decided to apply. The application process was quite simple and we learned that 157 units in four of our complexes met the program criteria.

The initial audit showed that our units required new fans for better air exchange, increased attic insulation, low flow shower heads, low flow aerators in the kitchen faucets as well as some weatherproofing. The LEAP grant level covered 100% of the costs for the energy efficient upgrades and we agreed to go ahead.

The process required entry to each unit on several occasions so scheduling and Notices of Entry were critical. To lessen the inconvenience to the tenants and to ensure we had staff on-site at all times, we scheduled our annual inspections with the audit and completed repairs when the contractors were working in the units. The work went well but there were some frustrating times when contractors changed their schedules after notices were issued.

The final audit has been completed but we do not have the technical results at this time. Many tenants have told us that they found their homes to be much more comfortable through the hot summer months than last year. We are hopeful that the steps taken will go a long way in reducing condensation problems that we have experienced over previous winters.

We are satisfied with the Energy Efficient Retrofits and we believe that we made the right decision in taking advantage of the available grants.
